So this happened...I got to do a gig poster for one of our favorite bands, The Elovaters
What had happened was...we got the winter tour email, "Kick ass! They're coming to Texas!". I looked at the email a few times, getting my "hmmmm?" going. I finally got my old stones together and emailed the bands management...
"We love The Elovaters and are beyond stoked you’re coming back to Texas. The March 6 show at the Scoot Inn will be our 4th, would’ve been our 5th but we got to the Summer Traditions gig in Mesa a few years ago too late.
How do you pick poster artists? I’d love to be able to submit something for the Texas show. Got (what I think is) a great idea cooking for it.
Please take a look at my sites if you have a minute…I may be a kook, but I’m a kook with a couple skills 😂"
I was proud of myself for rolling the dice, but honestly wasn't expecting much. A couple days later, I got this:
"Mike,
I'm with the band right this second and they love your stuff. Want to send some concept sketches and we can see what sticks?"
Mind blown. At once both stoked and terrified. Time to deliver.
Emails exchanged, deals were made, sketches sent, did the back and forth. Ended up with the above.
Somewhere along the way we realized the Austin show would be right at the start of SXSW. No hotel rooms in Austin that weren't outrageously overpriced. The live music capital of the world is more than happy to take your money. We decided to do the Dallas stop instead.
March 7 finally got here. We got to go to sound check, meet & get pics with the band, then showtime later. The guys in the band were really nice, thanked me, said lots of nice things, and signed the poster. I'm 59 years old...gotta admit I was fanboying a bit. Which is oh, so painfully evident...

What a show! Veni Sun was new to us, but a great find. We've been wanting to see Surfer Girl for a long time, missed a chance to see them in Houston recently due to Texas weather. They did not disappoint (admittedly we were a little bummed at the line-up change, but those fears were quickly erased).
The Elovaters were great! The show was amazing, their warm greetings and words even more so. I told anyone associated with the band I'd love to do more with them, digits crossed.
Oh yeah...it did not hurt my ego AT ALL to see people buy "my" poster! Thanks to EVERYONE involved in this whole project (especially my wife for being patient with me through the whole process)!!!
Good times!
